Rumi is one of the most popular poets in the world today. Coleman Barks adds this line to Rumi's poem: “Dance when you’re perfectly free...”

This card features Joon's wording of the same line in Persian calligraphy:

رقص آنگاه کن که کامل آزادى

There is a complication. The line does not actually exist in Rumi's recitation of the times when one should dance. The reason is that the poet Rumi uses a method common to Persian music: the missing or “empty”  beat.

In Book 3 of the Masnavi Rumi gives a long list of times to dance: when sad, when suffering, when ill or when lost, and so on.

In his interpretation of the passage the poet Coleman Barks spells out the wordless empty line, “Dance when you’re perfectly free,” a time for dance that Rumi leaves for the reader or listener of the poetry to infer.
